What is the "Lemon Law"?
There are many different lemon laws that provide relief for consumers who purchase cars, trucks and other products that turn out to be defective. Each state has its own "lemon law", which provides specific criteria by which your vehicle can be found to be a "lemon". Once a vehicle is determined to be a "lemon", state laws require that the vehicle be repurchased from the consumer or replaced with a comparable new motor vehicle. Each state also has different rules as to what sort of vehicles qualify for relief under their lemon laws. This can include cars, sport utility vehicles, pick-up trucks, vans, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, motor homes and recreational vehicles.
However, even if your vehicle does not qualify under the state lemon law, there is a federal law that covers defects in all consumer products that are sold with a warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act can apply to all of the above vehicles, as well as boats, trailers (fifth-wheels), campers, computers, televisions, refrigerators, furnaces, air conditioners, washers and dryers, dishwashers - any consumer product that is sold with a warranty.
